Welcome to the community portal of IEEE RAS Technical Committee on Networked Robots.
We seek contributions from our members (e.g. recent research results, related news, workshop announcements).
Imagine a robot control computer with a GPS receiver, built-in high resolution cameras, 3-axis compass, accelerometer and gyroscope, high resolution camera, and network connectivity using Wifi or 3G/GPRS/HSPDA data services and also Bluetooth communication. On some cases, Near Field Communication (NFC) is also included for landmark recognition using RFID. Imagine that this control computer has programming libraries and frameworks for voice recognition and synthesis that can be easily used in several languages.
[Kyoto, Japan] On March 30, 2011, researchers at ATR Intelligent Robotics and Communication Laboratories demonstrated the latest developments in the Ubiquitous Network Robot project, this time featuring a robotic wheelchair in a shopping mall. The demonstration featured autonomous planning and safety using ubiquitous sensor networks, location-based services, and integration with remote teleoperators and mobile devices over the internet, giving elderly wheelchair users the independence to go shopping on their own.
Our TC will organize a symposium titled "Networked Robots Everywhere" at the International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS 2011) in San Francisco, California, USA, between September 25-30, 2011.
[Nara, Japan] In a televised demonstration at the Nara City Tourist Information Center on December 15th, researchers at ATR's Intelligent Robotics and Communication Laboratories unveiled a prototype system enabling elderly operators to control a conversational robot over the internet. Laboratory director Norihiro Hagita explained that the target of the system is to enable people with limited mobility, such as retirees or parents raising young children, to easily engage in part-time work using teleoperated robots.
I recently attended the Ubiquitous Networking Robot workshop at IROS 2010 in Taipei. This was the 11th workshop in a series at IROS and ICRA conferences since its inception in 2004. Presenters included academic speakers from several organizations in Japan and the European Union, representatives from industry, including Toshiba and NEC, and an invited talk from Prof. Hiroshi Ishiguro, from Osaka University.
With the growing emergence of ambient intelligence, ubiquitous computing, sensor networks and wireless networking technologies, “ubiquitous networked robotics“ is becoming an active research domain of intelligent autonomous systems. It targets new innovative applications in which robotic systems will be integrated into ubiquitous computing environments as physical autonomous entities. These entities are able to interact autonomously with the ambient environment and provide added value services like assisting people in smart homes, offices, buildings and public spaces.
During the Hannover Industrial Fair 2010, a Workshop on Networked Mobile Wireless Robotics took place on Monday 19th April 2010 in the Robotation Academy GmbH
This initiative was supported by ABB, ETSI - European Telecommunications Standards Institute, Goetting AG, Intel, Microsoft, OFFIS Oldenburg, University of Würzburg, Technical University Munich and Zentrum für Telematik, Gerbrunn.
Networked Robotics will be in the spotlight in the form of a major feature during the IFAC Telematics Applications Symposium between October 5th and October 8th, 2010. With speakers from all around Europe and the world against the backdrop of the largest city in western Romania, the conference aims to bring together the latest in the field of Robotics. More information and the official conference pages can be found under IFAC Telematics Applications Symposium 2010.
